Inland Water Transport in India

Inland Water Transport in India In India, 14,500 km of river channels are navigable, of which 3,700 km are usable by mechanised boats. But actually, only 2000 km are used. Of the total canal length of 4,300 km in India, 900 km IS navigable, but only 330 km is used.

The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) came into eXistence on October 27, 1986 for development and regulation of inland waterways in the country. The Author­ity undertakes various schemes for development of IWT­related infrastructure on National Waterways. The head office of the Authority is located at Noida. The Authority also has its regional offices at Patna, Kolkata, Guwahati and Kochi and sub-offices at Allahabad, Varanasi, Bhagalpur, Farakka and Kollam.
